The Story Behind Sterilite Corporation

For more than 85 years, Sterilite Corporation has been a trusted part of everyday life in homes across America. What began in 1939 as a small, family-owned partnership has grown into the largest plastic housewares manufacturer in North America, with seven manufacturing plants and over 12 million square feet of production space. Through it all, the Sterilite Company has remained committed to making everyday life easier, more organized, and more efficient.

A Legacy of Innovation and Growth

The story of Sterilite Corporation began with founders Saul and Edward Stone and Earl Tupper, who set out to explore the emerging potential of plastics through injection molding. While their initial efforts in manufacturing shoe heels were short-lived, the experience laid the foundation for decades of innovation. During World War II, the company shifted to producing essential plastic goods for the Armed Forces, building expertise that would shape the future of the Sterilite brand.

In the years that followed, Sterilite products evolved alongside the needs of American households. From toys and tabletop items to beverageware and household containers, the company expanded its capabilities. By the 1960s, Sterilite introduced a broad line of plastic housewares, including early food storage solutions and one of its first storage bins, products that helped define the organization category as we know it today.

From Early Innovation to Everyday Storage Essentials

Today, Sterilite is known for its wide range of durable, affordable solutions, including storage containers, wastebaskets, laundry and utility products, kitchen solutions, garage storage, and office organization. Backed by a strong U.S. manufacturing footprint, Sterilite’s history is rooted in continuous improvement, thoughtful design, and a deep understanding of how people live.
